William Sanford Mason was an artistic virtuoso who painted portrait, landscape, and genre scenes, as well as historical and literary paintings.  Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of renowned portrait painter Sanford Mason (1798-1862).  William later moved to Philadelphia, where he spent most of his career, though he occasionally traveled to Boston and other areas of the country.
