(1837–1908)

Born in England, Samuel S. Carr immigrated to the United States in the 1860s.  Upon his arrival, he settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he resided with his sister and her husband and where he would work until the end of his life.  He began exhibiting genre paintings in the 1870s, and eventually developed his reputation as a painter of Coney Island subjects. These delightful scenes of families enjoying amusement park attractions often show children at play.

Samuel S. Carr was a member of the Brooklyn Art Club. His work was exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and the National Academy of Design. Carr’s work is included in permanent collections of the New Britain Museum of American Art, Connecticut; Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Massachusetts; and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts.
