Little is known of the short but promising career of Thomas W. Marshall. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was primarily self-taught. In 1872 he traveled to Europe with fellow artist A. Wordsworth Thompson, sketching in Brittany and in Switzerland. Upon his return home he exhibited European, Hudson River, and Adirondack subjects at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association. He was a member of the American Society of Painters in Water Color. He died of pneumonia at the age of 24.
