Frederick J. Mulhaupt (1871–1938)
The Valley Road, c. 1925
Oil on canvas, 36 x 36 in.
Signed lower right: Mulhaupt
Provenance: descended in the family of the original owner, until 2016
A large, major work that Mulhaupt likely painted for exhibition, The Valley Road depicts a view of a snow-covered valley dotted with tall stands of trees. A cluster of houses along an icy, winding road overlooks a partly frozen stream. Mulhaupt’s limited range of colors, command of tonal relationships, and deft brushwork combine to convey the distinct atmosphere and mood of a winter day in New England.
