Swiss subjects preoccupied Casilear in 1873, when he exhibited The Jungfrau at the National Academy of Design and Recollections of the Young Frau at the Brooklyn Art Association, and painted, Alpine Scenery. It depicts a snow-covered mountain peak jutting into the sky, as seen from a rocky path leading into a cluster of pines. The afternoon sun warms the tops of the near and distant pines, and it faintly reveals a deep ravine in the right foreground. A lone wanderer with pack and walking stick heads up the path into the dark forest.
