Levi Wells Prentice (1851–1935)
Pansies and Nasturtiums, c. 1890
Oil on canvas, 11 ½ x 6 ½ in.
Signed lower right: L. W. P.
Provenance: Berry-Hill Galleries, New York; private collection, Seattle
Among the large number of known still lifes by Prentice, flower pieces are rare, making Pansies and Nasturtiums an exceptional example from this prolific artist. In this painting Prentice depicts a variety of summer wildflowers—growing upwards, reaching above grasses and weeds—just as they are found in nature.
