Rider on the Ranch, San Marcos, Texas was inspired by McLellan’s Texas roots. A cowboy rides by a farmhouse painted in bright purples and yellows with subtle hints of blue. A large tree shades the house, and a towering windmill dwarfs the figure of the rider. The scene is infused with strong, vibrant color. McLellan’s realistic portrayal of form is representative of the Texas Regionalist style, which sought to portray local scenes while incorporating aspects of modernism.
