A lovely example of the Tonalist figurative style that was popular in the mid-1880s, Reflections depicts a genteel young lady who is seated along the banks of a river. Her relaxed pose and calm expression indicate her contemplative mood as she gazes across the glassy surface of the water. The striking black bands in her gown and the vivid pink lining of her parasol heighten the relatively soft, subdued palette.
